HILLENBRAND AWARD

Mr President, It is my pleasure to place before you the name of Mr Friedrich A Herbst of Bensheim, Germany, for the “Hillenbrand Award” of the Academy of Dentistry International for the year 2011.

Following his secondary education, Friedrich Herbst undertook technical studies at the tertiary level prior to commencing a career with Siemens AG, an engineering firm which in the health field, was one of the pioneers of the 20th century in the development and manufacture of radiological equipment. Siemens later commenced manufacturing quality dental equipment, becoming a global leader in this field. As the dental manufacturing arm of Siemens grew, so did the input and responsibilities of Friedrich Herbst. Throughout this period, he progressed to become the “Ausland (Foreign) Manager” for Siemens Dental, whereupon his cordial contacts within the dental industry spanned the globe.

During the mid 1980s as the growth in technology world-wide expanded, Siemens was at the forefront of this wave, with much of the drive in the dental field emanating from Friedrich Herbst. It was during this period that many innovations in dental diagnostic equipment and treatment aids were developed by Siemens engineers. However, the most significant of these is arguably the development of the “cad-cam” machine of Mormann and Brandestini, the CEREC, which Siemens (through the foresight of Fredrich Herbst) brought to fruition. This concept was presented in the USA for the first time at the ADA/FDI Meeting in Washington DC in October 1988 in a programme featuring Mormann and Brandestini entitled “Computer-aided Direct Ceramic Inlay”. Since that time, the use of computers linked to intra-oral cameras has expanded clinical treatment options for patients and dentists substantially.

Following his early retirement from Siemens, the International Dental Manufacturers were quick to harness the talents of this man, when he was recruited as its Executive Director. Only a few years ago at the ADI Convocation in San Francisco, the Academy recognized his service to the dental profession by the Award of Honorary Fellowship. However, since achieving Fellowship he has undertaken willingly, initiatives and responsibilities which have done much to further the aims of the Academy.

Of particular importance to the Academy since the Board of Regents re-structured its European regional areas in 2006, has been the growth of interest in ADI and its activities on that continent during the past five years. Throughout this period, Friedrich Herbst has been most active in using his initiative and extensive contact base to assist the European Regents Drs Rusca, Sadovski and Seeberger, to encourage dentists of the highest quality to seek Fellowship. He has also been instrumental in developing the successful Convocation which took place in Cologne in March 2011 and that which is to take place in Paris in November 2011.

Whereas many would be content with having achieved Honorary Fellowship of the Academy, it is indeed fortunate that this has not been the case for such an outstanding person as Friedrich Herbst. On the contrary, he has taken his newly won status as an Honorary Fellow most seriously and in doing so, has clearly fulfilled the requirements to qualify for the Hillenbrand Award.  I t is my pleasure to present to you Mr FRIEDRICH A HERBST for conferral of the ADI “Hillenbrand Award” for 2011.

Mr. Friedrich Herbst was presented with the Hillenbrand Award

at the ADI Annual Meeting October 9, 2011 by Dr. Thomas Brink,  ADI President.
