"Special Care for Special Patients"
- John W. Harden, Jr. DMD, FADI and Daniel J. Ninan, DDS, FADI
Dr. John Harden will share how to successfully treat the fearful and medically compromised patient. He will demonstrate how to treat the most challenging patients day after day. These patients are referred to him from a large geographic area.
1) How to determine if a patient can be safely treated in the office or if it is necessary to treat them in the operating room.
2) How to successfully prepare the patient for hospital dentistry in terms of the requisite paperwork, history and physical exam, and consultations with other healthcare providers.
3) How to prepare for unusually challenging cases in the operating room.
John W. Harden, Jr. DMD is a member of the Medical Staff of Emory University Hospital Midtown, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dentistry. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor or Oral Rehabilitation at Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University. Dr. Harden has been performing hospital dentistry and anesthesiology since 1984 and has been on the medical staff with the Emory Hospital System since 1988. He has extensive experience treating fearful and medically compromised patients both in the office and in the hospital. He is also an anesthesia consultant for the Georgia State Board of Dentistry (since 1989), and evaluates dentists for conscious sedation permits. He has also been a consultant for the U.S. Army at Fort Gordon, and has lectured for many years during the annual conscious sedation course for their dental residents. Dr. Harden has 30 plus years experience in dental anesthesiology and hospital dentistry, a medical residency training program in anesthesiology, and two years medical training in Europe.
Dr. Daniel Ninan will share how to successfully treat an expectant patient. Reviewing physiological changes and differing treatments and prescriptions for a pregnant patient. He will also be covering the FDA’s recent elimination of the pregnancy risk categories and what is replacing those guidelines.
1) Understand how the physiological changes can impact dental care.
2) If an emergency occurs, how CPR on the pregnant patient needs to be modified.
3) Become aware of some of tools that are available when selecting medications for the pregnant patient.
Daniel Ninan, DDS has been an assistant professor of dental education services at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry for past 7 years. During the same time, he also been practicing dentistry at SAC Health System, a Federally Qualified Health Center which has received Level 1 NCQA Patient Centered Medical Home Recognition, the highest available recognition. SAC Health System has received grants specific to provide dental treatment on pregnant women who otherwise are unable to receive dental care.
