Professor Alexandre Mersel, born in Strasbourg, France, graduated from the Faculty of Odontology, University of Lyon, France, and specialized in Prosthodontics at the Jerusalem Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine, in Israel. Alexandre’s unlimited passion for dentistry, especially for gerodontics, made him an outstanding practitioner and exceptional university teacher. He served in numerous functions in organized dentistry. Alex was a Councilor and Regional Director of the Continuing Education Program for Europe of the Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI), a member of the FDI Education Committee, a Board Member and Chairman of the Working Group Basic & Continuing Education of the European Regional Organization of the FDI, ERO. He was as a Board member of ERO, FDI Councilor and Member of the FDI Finances Committee, and as the FDI Liaison Councilor for the Education Committee.

His academic roles included Associate Professor at the Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine in Israel, Head of the Department of Removable Prosthodontics and Gerodontics at the Haifa Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, Director of the Jerusalem Geriatric Dental Center, Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Marseilles and at the Dental Faculty of Paris V University, and Research Fellow at the Brookdale Institute of Gerodontology.

He founded and presided the European College of Gerodontology and co-founded the International Association of Gerodontology. He was the Chair of the FDI Section of Gerodontology and the FDI Special Committee on Gerodontology. Professor Mersel acted as Consultant to the Israeli Prime Minister's Commission of Public Health and as Director of the Dental Health Services Municipality of Jerusalem. He received The City of Paris Silver Medal. He authored more than 90 scientific articles and served as a member of the editorial board of several international journals.

Alex was a Member of the Academy of Dentistry International, ADI, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy, PFA. He served as an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Global Oral Health and other international dental journals. His last opera is the book entitled "Oral Rehabilitation for Compromised and Elderly Patients" published with Springer International Publishing.

Professor Alex Mersel was an asset to the oral health profession and he will stay in our hearts.

We are saddened to announce the passing on March 3, 2020 of the Academy’s President-elect, Dr Luis Fujimoto. His knowledge, passion and service to the profession of dentistry and the promotion of oral health will be missed.

Dr Luis J. Fujimoto was inducted into the Academy of Dentistry International in October 2000 and recently served as Regent for the Northeastern USA Section before rising to the office of President-elect in October 2018. Dr Fujimoto has a long history of service to dentistry through professional organizations and regulatory bodies. He was the current President of the New York County Dental Society, a director at the Medical Reserve Core for the New York City Department of Health and Mental, the Federation of Associations of Regulatory Boards (FARB), the Noguchi Medical Research Institute, the ADI Foundation, and the AADB Foundation. Dr. Fujimoto served two terms as chair of the New York State Board of Dentistry for the New York State Department of Education. He was the past chair of the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations for the American Dental Association. He was the past chair of the Board of Trustees of the AADB Foundation. Dr. Fujimoto was the past president of the American Association of Dental Boards (AADB), the Osseointegration Foundation, the AADB Foundation, the Northeastern Society of Periodontists, and the Eastern Dental Society.

He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the American Dental Association - Golden Apple Award, the American Association of Dental Boards - Citizen of the Year Award and the New York State Dental Association - Leadership Award. He held several fellowships from multiple organizations including the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, Academy of Dentistry International, Academy of Osseointegration, New York Academy of Dentistry and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He was a knight of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta and a member of the Council of Saint Thomas More. Dr. Fujimoto is survived by his loving wife, Hsin-i "Serena" Wen.

In lieu of flowers, Dr. Fujimoto's family ask to please make a donation to the suggested charities of your own choice in memory of Dr. Fujimoto.

The convocation team comprising of Dr Wing-Kong Yip, ADI Past President and Asia Pacific Regent, and Dr Chang Young Ahn, Chairman of the Korean Chapter, presided over the impressive and memorable meeting. At that meeting, Dr Chang Young Ann was also appointed and installed as the Vice-Regent of the Asia Pacific Section by Dr Wing-Kong Yip, the current Regent of the Asia Pacific Section.

In keeping with the Academy’s goal to promote continuing education, the audience was treated to a lecture entitled ‘Digital Technology Integration in Dentistry’ by Professor Jung-Suk Han, Professor and Dean of the Department of Prosthodontics, Seoul National University, School of Dentistry.

Michael J. Racich, D.M.D. is a 1982 graduate of the University of British Columbia.. He is in general practice with emphasis on comprehensive restorative dentistry/prosthodontics and orofacial pain/IMD.  He is a Clinical Instructor at UBC Faculty of Dentistry and Program Instructor for UBC Pain Medicine Residency Training Program.  An active member of the following organizations: Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Orofacial Pain, American Association of Endodontists, American Equilibration Society, American Headache Society, Canadian Academy of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics, Canadian Pain Society, International Association for the Study of Pain, International College for Prosthodontics, International Congress of Oral Implantologists, Pacific Coast Society for Prosthodontics and Pain BC.  He has served on numerous committees and councils for multiple organizations as well as the 2016-2017 President of the American Equilibration Society. Dr. Racich is a well-known international speaker at scientific seminars and programs, and has published innumerable articles for the scientific literature in addition to four texts. He holds Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Orofacial Pain, Canadian Academy of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics, Academy of Dentistry International and the American College of Dentists.

Vageesh Kumar Sabharwal, D.D.S. is a 2001 graduate of the University of Toronto.  In 2012 he completed the American Dental Association Kellog Executive Management Program. He is in general practice and owner of Sabharwal Dental Group of Toronto, Canada.  An active member of the Academy of General Dentistry, Canadian Dental Association, Ontario Dental Association, Holistic Dental Association, South Asian Dental Association, International Team for Implantology, North Indian Medical and Dental Association of Canada. Dr. Sabharwal served as North American Section Editor for Indian Dental Research and Review. He has served on numerous committees and held various offices with his professional organizations and currently serves as Examiner, National Dental Examining Board of Canada.  He holds Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry, Academy of Dentistry International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Oral health is very frequently overlooked by governments as they fail to recognize that oral diseases are some of the most prevalent NCDs on the planet. 3.5 billion people suffer untreated oral diseases from which the indirect costs, such as time away from school and work, amount to more than US$140 billion per year, ranking the indirect costs of oral diseases among the top 10 causes of death.  There is a clear social gradient to the inequalities in oral health, and the social determinants for oral diseases are common to many other NCDs. Treatments for these NCDs and other conditions, for example cancer, will be compromised though poor nutrition consequent to poor oral function. Choking to death and inhalational pneumonia also are rooted in poor oral function and a compromised dentition.

Around the HLM, many side events are to be held and are both organized and attended by representatives of governments and NGOs. ADI as the only direct membership advocacy group for oral health in Special Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council will be represented at many of these events. ADI’s positioning is for all Member States to recognize oral diseases as:

(1)   major social, economic and developmental burdens on society and national development

(2)   an indicator of common risk factors predisposing to other NCDs

(3)   largely preventable through tough actions

a.      against added and non-intrinsic sugars in all forms, including taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages

b.      against the use of all forms of tobacco

c.       including access to

i.      clean water for use in daily oral hygiene practices

ii.      appropriate availability and use of fluoride agents such as toothpaste and drinking water.

Advocacy for Oral Health and Sustainability at the United Nations – Academy of Dentistry International takes a Unique Role

New York, August 14, 2018. The Academy of Dentistry International (ADI) was granted Special Consultative Status to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) on 24 July 2018. This consultative status is unique for an oral health-related membership organization and as such, enables a loud and direct voice for global oral health to be heard at the highest levels of the United Nations’ member states, the UN Secretariat and Agencies.

As an NGO with Special Consultative Status, the Academy will submit statements and provide advice on matters related to its areas of competence –

·         Promotion of oral health as a critical element of general health;

·         Role of oral health in the achievement of the UN’s Agenda for 2030 – the Sustainable Development Goals; and

·         Social responsibility and volunteerism of the dental profession.

This unique status is granted at a pivotal time for oral diseases when over half the world’s population have no access to even basic and essential dental care. The ‘Global Burden of Disease Studies’ funded by The Gates Foundation report that untreated dental decay in permanent teeth is the single most prevalent disease on the planet, severe chronic periodontal (gum and underlying bone) disease the sixth most prevalent and untreated decay in deciduous (‘milk’) teeth the 12^th most prevalent. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) 60% to 90% of children worldwide have dental caries. Unfortunately, oral diseases affect the most vulnerable individuals, children, elderly and members of racial and ethnic minorities. The economic burden of these preventable diseases is severe. The indirect costs, such as time away from school and work, amount to more than US$140 billion per year, ranking the indirect costs of oral diseases among the top 10 causes of death. The World Oral Health Report (published by WHO) concluded that oral disease is still a major public health problem in high-income countries and the burden of oral diseases is growing in many low- and middle-income countries. Oral diseases are linked to diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and pre-term low birthweight babies among other conditions. Common risk factors for many of these diseases include sugar, tobacco, alcohol, lack of hygiene, unsafe water, and lack of injury prevention. There is a clear social gradient to the inequalities and disparities in oral health, and  the social determinants for oral diseases are common to many other Non-Communicable Diseases.

In the build-up for this unique role the Academy, together with many other civil society organizations, has submitted statements to the forthcoming High-level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases to be attended by heads of State and Government during the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in September 2018.

The Academy’s mission is brought to life through the service of its members in volunteer work and oral health projects serving communities in need. The ADI spearheads social responsibility among the oral health community supporting its members and others to design and deliver health programs, and to provide advice on oral health to governments and other NGOs worldwide with focus on the under-privileged and under-served. Through a number of its members, the Academy has close working relationships with the WHO Global Oral Health Programme. The President of ADI, Dr. Gerhard Seeberger, a dentist from Cagliari, Italy, views this new status as a major game-changer for the reductions in oral diseases and their harmful effects on general health and quality of life.

“As oral health professionals we need to talk less among ourselves, and truly reach out to Governments and other NGOs within the health sector and beyond, to work together to make health and improved well-being  a reality for all peoples. Special Consultative Status brings the call for essential oral health and disease prevention closer toward achievement of the SDGs and the UN’s 2030 Agenda - Transforming our World.”

The designated representative to the UN on behalf of the Academy of Dentistry International is the Academy’s Vice President for International Affairs, Dr. David Alexander a  specialist in dental public health and the study of oral diseases. In describing the goals for the Academy with ECOSOC, Dr. Alexander added:

“We are strong supporters of the Sustainable Development Goals and put significant focus on a broad number of the goals which together will not only help prevent oral diseases but promote health and well-being in general. Currently the Academy is the only voice for oral health within ECOSOC and we hope others will join us and align around common goals for the betterment of mankind. It’s time to stop the needless suffering from these preventable diseases.”

2018 Campaign Say Ahh: Think Mouth, Think Health

FDI World Dental Federation has announced that materials are available for member associations to use in the promotion of World Oral Health Day (WOHD), which is celebrated on March 20. These include posters, ads, a brochure, an advocacy toolkit, and more. As an ADI Fellow, you are an Affiliate member of FDI and can register to download the materials at www.worldoralhealthday.org/members.

FDI develops the WOHD strategy and messaging, which are then rolled out through you. A member toolkit has been prepared to provide you with the WOHD branding and key messages and introduce you to the resources for the development of national campaigns. Use it to get involved with WOHD and encourage others to join the global movement.

The Campaign:
‘Say Ahh: Think Mouth, Think Health’ encourages people to make the connection between their oral health and their general health and well-being. A healthy mouth and a healthy body go hand in hand, and this year’s campaign theme prompts people to recognize the close association between the two and the impact that one has on the other.

For the first time, FDI is launching a three-year campaign strategy under the theme ‘Say Ahh’. The phrase is synonymous with health and will resonate with many globally. It is commonly used by both dentists and doctors during check-ups and invites people to open their mouths for examination. Combined with different sub-themes each year, the ‘Say Ahh’ campaign brings to life the notion of the mouth serving as a mirror to the body and reflecting overall health.

In 2018, the aim is to educate people on the mouth and body connection and ‘Think Mouth, Think Health’. In 2019, the goal is to motivate people to take action in protecting their oral health and ‘Act on Mouth Health’. In 2020, the aim is to empower people to work together to drive positive change for oral health and ‘Unite for Mouth Health’.

About World Oral Health Day:
Celebrated each year on March 20, World Oral Health Day is the largest global awareness campaign on oral health. It was launched by FDI World Dental Federation in 2007 and is the culmination of year-long activities dedicated to raising global awareness on the prevention and control of oral disease. BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF ORTHODONTISTS

ST. LOUIS, July 7, 2017 – Michael G. Durbin, DDS, MS, an orthodontist with offices in  Des Plaines and Long Grove, Illinois, has been elected by the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists (MSO) as its representative on the Board of Trustees of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).  The announcement was made during the AAO’s recent 117^th Annual Session in San Diego.

The AAO is the world’s oldest and largest dental specialty organization with more than 19,000 members. The MSO is one of eight constituent organizations of the AAO and serves orthodontists practicing in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, and the Canadian province of Manitoba.

“I am humbled by the confidence my colleagues in the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists have placed in me by electing me to represent them on the AAO Board of Trustees,” Dr. Durbin said.  “Working together, we will surmount challenges to ensure that patients continue to receive the highest level of orthodontic care from AAO members.”

Dr. Durbin is a 1984 graduate of Loyola University Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology with honors. He completed his dental education and orthodontic residency at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry, earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree with honors in 1988, and a Master’s of Science in Orthodontics and Certificate in Orthodontics in 1990.  He opened his orthodontic practice in 1990, and has been a partner in Associated Dental Specialists of Long Grove since 1998.

Dr. Durbin is a member of the AAO, the MSO and the Illinois Society of Orthodontists (ISO) as well as the American Dental Association (ADA), the Illinois State Dental Society (ISDS), and the Chicago Dental Society (CDS).  He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Academy of Dentistry International.

Dr. Durbin has a long history of service in organized orthodontics and dentistry at the local, state, regional and national levels.  For the AAO, Dr. Durbin has served in the House of Delegates, on the Council on Orthodontic Healthcare, including two years as chair, and on task forces and committees. He is the president of the AAO’s Donated Orthodontic Services Program, which provides orthodontic treatment to low income children across the country who lack insurance coverage or who do not qualify for other assistance in their states of residence.  He was general chair of the MSO’s 2016 Annual Session, and is a past president of the ISO. 

Also active with the ADA, Dr. Durbin’s volunteer positions have included the ADA Council on Membership, including a year as chair, and the ADA House of Delegates.  

Dr. Durbin has served on the Board of Trustees for the ISDS, and on the Board of Directors of the CDS.

His volunteer spirit carries into his community, as well, where Dr. Durbin is active in the Des Plaines Lions Club, and St. Alphonsus Parish. He is a former Cub Scout Cubmaster and assistant coach for Prospect Heights Youth Baseball.

Dr. Durbin is the recipient of the ADA's 2015 President's Award and the ISDS’ 2014 President’s Award in recognition of his special contributions to dentistry and the dental profession.  He is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor society, and the Odontographic Society of Chicago, the largest honorary dental society in the country.

Dr. Durbin has been married to his dental school classmate, Dr. Renee Pappas, a general dentist, since 1988. They reside in Prospect Heights, Ill. and are parents of two adult children. Dr. Durbin enjoys a variety of sports in his spare time, including snowmobiling, wave running, boating and spending time with his family.

It is with great joy I assume the Presidency of the ADI for 2016-2018! My cup runs over with excitement after the meeting in Rome with each of you who were present. There is a new feeling of companionship/fellowship as is the basis for our Society. Each of you is so very important to the entire body of this awakening giant among the many organizations within the dental profession.

The Annual meeting of the Board of Regents was held Dec 2, 2016, in the heart of Rome at the ENPAM Real Estate Building in a beautiful boardroom setting. It was a time for normal business transactions, introductions of new Regents and officers, goodbyes to transitioning Regents and Officers, and welcoming the new fellows in a convocation. Also honored were the International Dentist of the Year 2016 Dr. Adriano Albano Forghieri of Brazil, and Distinguished fellow awardee Dr. Laura Pittau of Italy. The new fellows are Dr. Mariagiovanna Cotugno of Italy, Dr Baheti Mayuresh Jagganath of India, and Dr. Alessandro Valenti of Italy.

An Italian symposium 2016 was the Continuing Education even on Dec. 3, presented by three outstanding clinicians. Dr. Stefano Colasanto, Dr. Alessandro Valenti and Dr. Dietmar Klement. The solid scientific content of each presentation included Occlusion, Perimplantitis, and Root Resorption, each of daily importance to the practicing dentist.

Many hours of dialogue with each Regent give me great enthusiasm for the work ahead as ADI enters a new era of international relevance, while retaining the local and national flowers of volunteerism.

As a fellow I can assure you our new Regents will be in personal contact with you as they assimilate the practical needs and resources of ADI while producing the products of “sharing knowledge” and creating opportunities for service as is consisted with the ADI mission statements. We will together strengthen the fellowship among us, enlarge the honored cadre within each section, and continue the valued programs and initiatives existing while identifying new ones.

Potential abounds within the newest initiative of our UN-NGO status, now in its first year! You will want to read more about the impact this portends for the entire world to achieve oral health! Read more as reports appear in our new journal of Academy of Dentistry International and in Section newsletters. 

I close with deep appreciation for each leader who has stepped up to the challenge ahead for ADI as well as for each fellow in the ranks of membership who make this organization so vital and relevant. May the blessings of the New Year attend your way.

Tuesday, 29 November is Giving Tuesday

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.
